Scene: Two brothers in an auto accident; one brother dying, needing blood which is not available, except from his gay brother. The law does not allow gay men to donate blood. A very moving scene.

miss Carter was a blessed, and gifted soprano, her range may have been 4 octaves.Just like Pavarotti, who had a 4 octave range,I am also a tenor, and may have a 4 octave range.Miss Carter was scared about singing this Hymn, because one must use every note, from low to high, including a High-A- sharp. This is why most singers who have a high range, like tenors, and sopranos, sing this song,it is way to high for a baritone, and contralto.Although George Beverly Shea sang it,and gang it good.but is more suited to the tenor, and soprano voice.but, was written to glorify The Almighty.Bless,us and praise his Name.!GB.Shea was a Bass-Baritone.!

I absolutely love Dixie. I wish I had the opportunity to meet her because from what I've read she really had a heart for the Lord. I think that is what makes this performance such a blessing. She really meant the words that she was singing. I'm sure she's beside Him now just praising His name. How great Thou art, O Lord, how great Thou art!

I saw the full episode- and I think you really have to see the whole thing to understand why the rendition is so powerful and so inspiring, and why Charlene looks up to God at the end of it.

I remember having seen the episode. It had to do with Charlene recapturing her faith because she was in serious disagreement with a pastor. Also note that Hal Holbrook, Dixie Carter's real life husband, is mesmerized by his wife's powerful voice. The show was a ridiculous in many ways, but emblematic of the social change and stylistic changes of the 1990s. It touched serious chords. My understanding is that Dixie Carter, an accomplished Broadway actress, willingly gave into the silliness to keep a job, but one of the caveats was that she got to do this once in a great while.

@@GoodmanMIke59 I believe it was for every "liberal rant" she had to give on camera, she'd be allowed to sing a song on camera too. The episode was about women in church, and what a woman's place is in church, an important discussion still being had today due to sexism in Christianity and Christian men using the Bible to justify their sexism when faith is meant to lift people up.

@@outinsider In 2013, I ran headlong into that of which you speak. Very traumatic. Went online, Googling religions that respect women ( or something to that effect) and Jimmy Carter came up as having left his longtime church because of their stance re women. So, I wrote him a letter. He wrote a brief note back telling me he was writing a book about my concerns. "A Call to Action" came out in 2014, and I bought a copy. Reading it, I perceived that Mr. Carter seemed to admire Ruth because she was more like a man than a woman and would never have been asked to do "menial" household chores. His own mother did private duty nursing and it took TWO women to cover her position in the home. That speaks volumes about what mothers/home managers DO! And you can be sure these hired domestic workers were paid a fraction of what Jimmy's mother made doing private duty ( which I believe often can be a cake job, mostly sitting!) In early 2015, online, I heard Jimmy Carter speak as one of a panel on Al Jazeera, regarding women's issues. I was dumbfounded and disappointed, again, when he made a comment to the effect of, if not verbatim, that " the reason we should treat women better is so they can take care of their parents when they get older". More free (or grossly underpaid) labor provided by females. Society basically still using women as slaves. I found out that a lot of Liberals are actually misogynist frauds and dangerous hypocrites when it comes to their REAL views and behaviors towards women. The legal system is doing unspeakable things to vulnerable females in my state and evidence indicates is known for their discrimination against females. It's still a good ole boy world and liberals are some of the worst. Pretty depressing and evil.

I was fortunate to meet and drive Miss Dixie about a year before she passed away. She was such a lady - friendly, personable, and as nice as could be. She is missed. And as a footnote I met and drove Mr Holbrooke the next day and we discussed history, literature, and Mark Twain. What an experience. A wonderful couple - there like will not be seen again.
